The Only Treasure
Sunday 18th MAR 07 11:30pm
I just watched RenCi charity show on Channel U. Although i do feel for the unfortunate sickly people and i commend the monk for trying to do his best to help them, i feel this is the wrong way to go about.
1) What does trying to scale a tower with your hands and ropes, dangling like a yoyo making people worry on the ground accomplish? Hard sell? I think so.
2) This idea of getting well known artists to weep, sob, tear infront of the camera is so USED. I mean, they could REALLY be shedding REAL tears from their hearts, them being actors not withstanding, But really, it's SOOOO used. It becomes just "another" tear jerker on TV every year. The purpose of the show, it seems, has already been degraded to the point of being just anohter circus show.
3) What's with getting actors to jump on enormous keyboards, sing off tune and jump around in the air like dying sea monkeys? The last i heard, actors and actresses have about enough money in salary and endorsement income to donate to the cause if they want to.
Do not get me wrong. I applaude the efforts of the monk, i really do. But i have to be realistic. I would rather pay for a paitent's bills, or buy him/her medication or other such things personally that i can see and touch, thank you very much. Money is hard to earn everywhere. Unless you count those who are born with a golden spoon, in which case, they should be shot in the you know where for being just such a you know what.
Besides, there really is no need to spend resources on manpower, TV Air time, Telco charges to raise these funds is there? Even if the power of TV needs to be utilised, surely there is no need to multiple locations? just factor in the logistics of pulling off something like this?
In the end, really... where DOES the donated money go to? How much REALLY goes into helping the needy? Of course, you can argue that they work hard to set up the donation drive, it is ok for them to earn something in return.
Bear in mind please, RenCi is NOT the only charity out here in Singapore. There are other causes out there who can survive and operate for YEARS with the amount of resources that is spent on the media coverage ALONE. I guess even charities now can't escape the "eat or be eaten" world now.
I am very contended and thankful. WHY?
I have eyes in which to see.
I have ears in which to hear.
I have limbs in which to work.
I have a mind in which to dream.
Now tell me, my friends, would any amount of money be worth any of these senses you already possess?
For those who are unfortunate to not have either one or some of the above senses, is ANY amount of money gonna get them back?
I'm no priest, father or preacher.
But really this world dosen't just belong to James Lee Ng, it also belongs to Jon Lai, Isaac Fong, etc etc.
Help one another if we can afford to. Human beings are kind by nature. There is no need to go to extremes to "help" people, at the same time profitting your own pockets.
Is that not hypocritical?
You know why? Because YOU will be pissed off with people make off with YOUR hard earn money and do something else for THEIR own benefit. Believe you me.
It's different when YOU become the recieving end, isn't it?
